Match reports

San Lorenzo earned a valuable away point against Estudiantes in Quilmes with a hard fought 0-0 draw. The visitors benefitted from a very leniant refereeing performance from Luis Alvarez. Estudiantes should have been awarded a 2nd half penalty for a clear handball and San Lorenzo were lucky to finish the match with as many as ten of their players left on the field after several nasty challanges. Estudiantes also got a few nasty digs in when they realised that the ref was letting San Lorenzo get away with so much indiscipline. Diego Placente was eventually sent off for San Lorenzo a second booking in the 88th minute however he was far from the worst offender in the game.  Overall it was not the most technically brilliant or exciting game to watch but it was still a real pleasure for me after having missed a week's worth of South American football due to broadband issues.

Independiente put in probably their best domestic performance so far in the 2010-11 season with a convincing 3-0 home win against Godoy Cruz that saw them move up to seventh position in the Clausura.  Independinete were the better team in the first half but couldn't make the breakthrough until the second. Jorge Pérez scored the first goal, Hernán Fredes scored the second and Leonel Núñez bagged a late third with five minutes to go.

Olimpo recovered from their two consecutive home defeats to inflict a 0-2 defeat on Colón in Santa Fe to return to the top of the table. Colón have now lost three consecutive home games but won three times in a row on the road. Néstor Barriero put Olimpo ahead and then a calamitous mistake from Juan Quiroga presented Marcos Litre with a goal only one minute after he had come on as a second half substitute. Their leadership of the division did not last long, later that afternoon River Plate managed a 1-0 home win against Banfield to become to become the sole leaders of the Clausura. Mariano Pavone scored the only goal of the game after some quality buildup play. River are not scoring a lot of goals in the Clausura but several of the ones they have bagged have featured good passing.

Racing Club put an end to their run of three consecutive defeats with a 0-0 draw against Huracán and Quilmes were denied their first win of the Clausura by a late Luciano Leguizamón equaliser in a 2-2 draw at Arsenal.

Argentinos Juniors wasted their chance to keep up the pressure on the leaders with yet another draw, a 1-1 tie with Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata.Gimnasia took the lead in the 25th minute through José Vizcarra but Argentinos equalised within five minutes through Ciro Rius. The hosts could not find a second goal meaning that they have drawn six of their nine games so far.

Lanús finished Boca Juniors' mini revival with a 2-0 win at "La Fortaleza", the first time they have bagged more than a single goal in the tie since April 1998. Diego Valeri and Santiago Hoyos scored the goals in the last quarter of an hour.

In the relegation six pointer between Buenos Aires minnows Tigre and All Boys, the visitors pulled off a surprise 0-1 win to lift themselves out of the relegation places on goal difference. Hugo Barrientos scored the decisive goal in the ninth minute with the easiest tap-in of his career to give All Boys their first win in seven attempts.

Vélez Sársfield kept up their excellent domestic form with a 2-0 home win against Newell's Old Boys, their fifth consecutive league win lifting them to within one point of leaders River Plate and with a game in hand. Newell's have the leakiest defence in the league having shipped 19 goals in 9 games, lie second bottom and have not won an away game in fourteen matches.
